Mission Statement
The Gage County Historical Society's mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Gage County, Nebraska. The five main themes are: People and communities; Railroads development and history; Industrial development and history; Medical and dental history; Agricultural development of Gage County, Nebraska.
Gage County is located in south central Nebraska. It was named in honor of the Reverend William Gage, a Methodist minister, who was chaplain of the first territorial assembly in 1856. Between 1855 and 1882, the southern half of the county was set aside for the Otoe-Missouri Indian Reservation.
Gage County Historical Society and Museum is located at 101 North 2nd Street, in the heart of Beatrice, Nebraska. This site is the very site Beatrice was founded in 1857. The history of Gage County is housed in a 1906 Burlington Depot. The Neo-Classical Revival style of the depot was chosen to reflect the growth and affluence of Beatrice and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Society's collection offers an insight into the People, Railroads, Industries, Medical, and Agricultural development of Gage County, Nebraska. The Society has a willing staff available to guide genealogists in finding those lost Gage County relatives. The Society's collection includes obituaries, county history books, cemetery and marriage, photographs, numerous newspaper articles and a whole host of other possible options to guide the researcher in their quest. The Gage County Historical Society has an extensive photographic collection. Gage County is the home of Dempster windmills, the oldest manufacturer in the nation; Beatrice Foods; Actors, Robert Taylor and Harold Lloyd.
