The Gage County Historical Society and her sponsors present The Beatrice 150 Playing Cards for sale. In the summer the Gage County Historical Society sold sponsorship for each card in a deck of 54. Each card was carefully chosen by the Society to best reflect the history of Beatrice, Nebraska. The Aces are the major business people including C.B. Dempster on the Ace of Hearts; the Kilpatrick Brothers on the Ace of Diamonds; Thomas Adams on the Ace of Clubs; and F.D. Kees on the Ace of Spades. The Kings are the Founding Fathers including Pap Towle on the King of Hearts; Dr. Herman Reynolds on the King of Spades; Jefferson B. Weston on the King of Diamonds; and Harrison F. Cook on the King of Clubs. The Queens are the ladies of Beatrice including Julia Beatrice Kinney on the Queen of Hearts; Clara Colby on the Queen of Spades; the Grabe sisters on the Queen of Diamonds and Helen (Towle) Weston on the Queen of Clubs. The Jacks are the entertainers and politicians including Robert Taylor on the Jack of Hearts; George Baker on the Jack of Diamonds; Weldon Kees on the Jack of Clubs and US Senator A.S. Paddock on the Jack of Spades. The Jokers are the Beatrice Fire Department and Harold Lloyd. The other numbered cards are various buildings and businesses throughout Beatrice in those early years. Each card has a brief trivia and the sponsor’s name. Each sponsorship has a connection to the picture on the cards they supported. These cards are a wonderful opportunity to learn about Beatrice in a fun way and to start conversations at your next card party.
According to Director of the Gage County Historical Society, Lesa Arterburn, “We would not have been able to print these playing cards without the generosity of our sponsors, 54, in total. The money raised on the sale of the cards will be used to print a historical book in 2007. It is critical for us to sell as many cards as possible in order to raise the funds to print a book depicting those very earliest days in Beatrice’s history that have never been printed before. Compiling and preparing the book for publication is a big job in itself, however we will need money to publish it.”
The cards sell for $10 a deck which is a fundraising project for the Society. The cards can be purchased at the Gage County Historical Society, 101 North 2nd in Beatrice, Nebraska or can be mailed to you by adding $3 ($1 for each additional deck) to cover the cost of shipping to Gage County Historical Society, PO Box 793, Beatrice NE 68310.
